Before you do anything rash, we want you to understand what causes hair loss from an Ayurvedic perspective.
Ayurveda is derived from two Sanskrit words – “Ayus” means life and “vid” meaning knowledge. The “Science of Life” is an ancient art of healing that originated in India about 5000 years ago. It offers some of the best and natural way not only to take care of our hair but also for our entire body. According to Ayurvedic Wisdom, our body is made of Doshas that are believed to be one of the three substances that are present in the human body. The three Doshas need to be in balance and harmony for our body to function well. Everyone has their own balance of Doshas. Their unique ratio of Doshas will define their ayurvedic constitution, which is the outline to achieve optimal health. They are:
And our hair will react to a particular type of Dosha.
Vata Hair – Vata types are thin, straight hair with higher porosity. It is normal to dry with thin hair density, slightly rough and curly. If one person has an imbalance of Vata dosha, it may cause excessive dryness, dandruff, frizzy and brittle hair, hair thinning, and split ends.
Pitta Hair – Pitta types are slightly wavy with a medium hair density, strength, and length. The imbalance of Patta dosha in a person may lead to excess heat in the hair follicles, which damages the hair, may cause thinning and early greyish of the hair.
Kapha Hair – Kapha types are thick, smooth, lustrous, well-hydrated, strong, and straight. Kapha Imbalance may lead to excess oil secretion that blocks the follicles of our scalp, which results in wet and sticky flakes.
According to Ayurveda, diseases are caused by a Dosha imbalance in our body. Pitta is responsible for the digestion of consumed foods, processing and absorbing of the nutrients from the cells. Vata is for movements – from blinking to the transmission of nerve impulses to blood circulation. Kapha handles and governs the structure of our body.
If one of these energies goes out of balance, our body cannot function optimally and this causes the diseases. Since the energies are connected and dependent on one another, imbalances of one of them cause irregularities in others. Hair loss is mainly caused by an imbalance of Pitta Dosha. When this Dosha becomes aggravated, it can hurt the quality and health of our hair. However, it can also be caused by chronic illness, certain medications, or genetics.
Here some factors that can throw your Pitta Dosha out of balance:
Amla – the superfood of Ayurvedic ingredients. When it comes to hair health and hair loss prevention, Amla for hair is not new. The vitamins and antioxidants in this fruit are some of the essential nutrients that you need for healthy and strong hair. It is one of the richest sources of Vitamin C. It can also act as a hair tonic and hair nourisher. It makes your hair healthier, stronger and prevents graying of hair. You can either drink amla juice daily, or you can make a paste to apply and massage on your hair.
Bhringraj is considered the best Ayurvedic herb in controlling hair loss. It literally means “king of hair” when you translated it to English. As its name suggests, it positively contains an ability to counter hair fall dilemmas, helps in reversing the baldness condition of our hair, and fights graying of hair. You can make a paste from its leaves to apply on your hair to promote hair growth. The paste then is left for a few minutes before you wash it off with water. Or you can extract the oil of this herb, which gives a calming effect after applying it to your scalp.
If Bhrungraj is best for preventing hair loss, then Neem is best for promoting hair growth. Regular use of Neem can strengthen the roots of our hair and improves the circulation of blood to the scalp. It can solve hair issues such as dandruff and dryness of the scalp. You can take some of its leaves and make a paste to apply and massage to your hair together with coconut or olive oil. Or add its leave to your bathwater.
More commonly known as soap nuts, this natural ayurvedic remedy has been used to promote hair growth, improves the texture and volume of hair, cleanse your scalp, and retain the natural oil it releases. Boil some soap nuts overnight, and use it as a shampoo. Wash your hair with water and pour half of the solution and apply and massage to your hair for 5 to 10 mins then wash it off with clean water. Do this every day, and you will see visible results.
Aloe Vera has been used for centuries for its healing properties. Aside from its skin benefits, it is also famous for its hair benefits. It can actually strengthen your hair, make your scalp healthier, and prevents hair fall. The best form of aloe vera to use for your hair is the raw gel of the plant. Rubbing aloe vera into your scalp and hair, letting it penetrate your hair follicles could condition and improved damaged dry hair. Let it sit for an hour, then rinse the gel off with a mild shampoo and clean water.
